This translates to "the killing intent," and assumes that raw power and the dominance it allows is the highest goal to strive for. So as Ryu trains, he realizes there's a growing dark side of his power, the Satsui No Hado, that seemingly offers more power if embraced. Many of them want to manipulate this potential for their own use, but others are simply inspired by it and want to see just how far it can go and what it can do. Ryu is special in that he seems to have more potential than almost anyone else around, which, as noted earlier, often attracts other characters to him. Ryu has personality, sure, but he's also intentionally kept somewhat generalized so we can project ourselves onto him (he comes from an empty slate backstory, and who isn't afraid of spiders?) I'm not going to go through all the details here as that's what the video below is for, but I will point to the main struggle Ryu consistently faces and is representative of: how to correctly use the power you obtain.
